Art: Van Gogh's Sunflowers

We had friends come over today and it was a rainy day so I thought of a rainy day in activity we could do.  First I thought about poppies but at the moment, as all my regular readers know, we've been doing about Van Gogh and in particular his Sunflowers.

It turned out really well so I thought I'd share how we did it today...

You will need:
  • Paint we used metallic gold, metallic bronze and yellow today
  • A potato (cut in half)
  • paint brushes
  • PVA glue
  • Yellow tissue paper
STEP ONE
First we used the potatoes to make a round shape for the inside of the flower...

Honi liked to use her fingers too...

STEP TWO

Cut petal like shapes with tissue paper.

STEP THREE

Using dots of glue mixed with yellow paint stick the petals down...

Until you have a complete Sunflower...

Further ideas...

We then cut them out, but that is up to you.

I am going to ask the girls to add some more detail to the centre of the sunflowers tomorrow if they like, dots of brown or black, the seed.

Honi tried sprinkling seeds directly on the painted centre, it was a great idea and would definitely work with bigger seeds, poppy or even better, real sunflower seeds.  I will update this post the final picture tomorrow but for now I will leave you with today's creations...

  1. These sunflowers are really effective Lisa and I am impressed by the simplicity of the idea...
