Have you been caught yet?

I was highly amused today when, in a local shop, the girls were asked if they were enjoying their break from school.

Chiara stepped backed and rolled her eyes with that "oh, no. Not that question again," look on her face.  Naomi tried to explain to the lady that she didn't go to school, but the lady didn't seem to understand that a child didn't have to go to school so...

I stepped up and explained loud and clear that they don't go school, I educate them myself at home.

Oh, the horrified look on her face! The look was then followed by the funniest thing ever!  The lady drew in closely to me as if she had a secret to tell me and whispered "have you been caught yet?" Her face was serious.  She actually really thought I was committing a criminal act!

I responded with, "actually it is legal.  I'm not a criminal, it's ok.  Oh, and no you don't need to inform anyone, however the LA does know us and visits us regularly. Actually they are very happy with how well the girls are doing." Her eyes bulged out of her head making her look like a giant bush baby.

I was amused but also stunned with:

1. How ignorant she was.

2. That she considered me a criminal!

3. That she was willing to keep it under wraps!

She then felt the need to congratulate us after asking how the girls were doing - I think she felt rather uncomfortable.  I tried to consider how I would feel if I found myself in a similar situation, so told her it was no problem and that there was quite a lot of us about (smiling to try to make her feel a bit better).

You see, I don't think she meant to be in anyway malicious, she's always seemed nice when serving us.  It just amused me greatly, so I thought I would share - it was certainly a friendlier twist on the 'is it legal?' question -  at least she seemed to be willing to be an accomplice to my crime!

  1. Oh my goodness, that is quite funny although in a somewhat worrying way! I wonder what other "crimes" she'd be willing to cover up! We don't seem to get friendly questions - the worst I got was, "Are you in some kind of cult?"

  6. Made me smile. It's amazing how many people can't grasp the concept that the kids don't go to school.

    1. Yes, we live in a brainwashed society it seems. Sad, but at least that is one more person who now knows it's an option :)
