Science: Magically moving toy cars!

This mini project is great fun and entertained my younger two for ages!  I think I will need to get a few more magnets though as they argued over turns (as 3 and 5 year olds do).

All you need is...

A toy car, sticky tape and 2 bar magnets!

Tape one magnet to a toy car ensuring that you don't tape the wheels, otherwise it won't be able to move and the magic won't work!

Then get your second bar magnet and put it near the car.  If they are opposite pole the magnets will stick and the car will be stuck. However, if you have the same poles facing, the car will be pushed away from the second magnet, magically moving it along the table or the floor!

How does this work?

This works because with magnets opposites attract but the same poles on a magnet repel, hence pushing the car away.  It is a force that is invisible to our eyes yet we can see how it effects things around us, a bit like the wind: we can't see it but we can see what it does!
